The conference, held in conjunction with the Michigan Brain Injury Provider Council, is the largest brain injury conference
in the nation.  The two day conference is an educational program that features experts in brain injury rehabilitation from Michigan as well as guest speakers from around the nation.

A traumatic brain injury, also known as TBI, is defined as a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the function of the brain. A traumatic brain injury can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.

According to Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a traumatic brain injury is an affliction that 1.4 million Americans sustain each year, 50,000 of which don’t survive. While TBI’s have differing levels of severity (ranging from mild to severe), they are usually acquired from a simple injury to the head and/or neck.

Falls are the leading cause accounting for 28% of traumatic brain injuries, while brain injuries from car accidents account for 20%. However, car accidents have a higher frequency when it comes to TBI hospitalizations, which studies have shown effect over 280,000 people each year. Other common causes of brain injuries include motorcycle accidents, sports-related accidents, and assaults.

Many of times an individual who suffers a brain injury as a result of an accident does have legal rights.  People injured in a Ann Arbor car accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, bicycle accident, or pedestrian accident, can often have claims for personal injuries and can file Michigan no-fault insurance claims to pay for medical expenses, lost wages, and other benefits.

“Every day we work with individuals who suffer a closed head injury or brain injury from a Ann Arbor car accident or some type of accident. We are a proud sponsor of the conference.  The Brain Injury Association of Michigan is the only statewide organization in Michigan dedicated to providing support, education, advocacy, research and prevention, and through our sponsorship Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. is able to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to the organization’s mission,” says firm partner and attorney, Daniel Buckfire.

New Technology to Prevent Car Accidents Being Tested in Ann Arbor Michigan

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 282,075 car accidents in Michigan in 2010. Of these car accidents 937 of them were fatal, including 70,501 injuries. Compared to national totals there were 5,419,000 car accidents. The number of fatalities amounted to 32,885, with more than 2.2 million injuries.

Although the amount of car accidents have decreased each year, car accidents are still recognized as one of the main causes of death in the United States. Most car accidents are completely avoidable, but we continue to take chances by texting behind the wheel, talking a call, or eating our bagel on the way to work. Distractions can have disastrous effect if you do not take the proper precautions and realize that you are endangering your life and the lives of others on the road.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has created new crash avoidance technology that is currently being tested in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute. They are testing this technology for a year by installing this new program on 3,000 vehicles, called the “Safety Pilot Project,” to help regulate traffic flow in Ann Arbor.

According to the NHTSA, Vehicle-to-Vehicle safety technology could help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of four out of five unimpaired vehicle crashes. To accomplish this, the model deployment vehicles will send electronic data messages, receive messages from other equipped vehicles, and translate the data into a warning to the driver during specific hazardous
traffic scenarios.

Victims of car accidents do have legal rights and should pursue them immediately after the accident. When choosing your Michigan lawyer, it is key to choose the right lawyer so that you may receive a fair settlement. Your car accident lawyer can also help you receive all of your Michigan No-Fault Insurance benefits, including medical expenses, lost wages, attendant care services, and other benefits.

Our Ann Arbor car accident lawyers at Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. are reporting a car-train collision that happened at Pontiac Trail, just south of Warren. The accident happened on Friday, September 21st, around 4:30 a.m. According to police, a 23-year-old woman struck a train while it was in motion and was dragged from the intersection and into a ditch.  The 23-year old woman was taken to the hospital for her injuries suffered. The cause of this accident remains under investigation, however the fire department that was on the scene said the railroad crossing has no gate, but does have a signal.

I am so sorry to hear about this terrible accident. I hope the injured victim has a fast recovery without any permanent damages.
