There was a story in the paper today about four people injured in a Springfield car accident on November 17 in Calhoun County, near Battle Creek. According to the Springfield Department of Public Safety, the four Springfield residents, including an infant, were seriously injured when the female driver of their car turned onto Dickman Road from WyndTree Apartments and was allegedly struck by a car traveling west. The female driver had to be cut from the car. All four residents were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police are still investigating this accident.

I read a story in the newspaper today about a fatal M-14 wrong way accident this morning near Beck Road on the Washtenaw/Wayne County border. According to the Michigan State Police, a 58-year-old Ann Arbor woman was driving on M-14 when a car allegedly travelling the wrong direction, driven by a Beverly Hills woman, hit her head-on. The Ann Arbor woman died at the scene.

Police state the driver lost control of her car and alcohol was not a factor.  The Beverly Hills woman was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Police are still investigating this tragic accident.

I read in the news today about a Spring Arbor multiple-vehicle accident that occurred on Monday, October 11th at the intersection of Spring Arbor Road and 19th Street. According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s office, a 92-year-old Michigan Center man was allegedly trying to make a left turn across four lanes of traffic into Polly’s Country Market when his vehicle was allegedly struck by a white SUV and Ford Escape. While reading the weekend news, I read a tragic story about a Jackson County Pedestrian Accident last week. According to Blackman Township Public Safety, Michelle Thrun was jogging on North Dettman Road when she was allegedly stuck by a vehicle driven By Karen Grant. Ms. Thrun suffered a serious injury to the brain.

Police went on to say that their investigation showed that the driver of the vehicle blacked out while driving and had previously blacked out before while driving. Drugs and alcohol were not involved. Ms. Grant has been charged in Jackson County District Court with felonious driving.

• E. Children under 16 may operate other ORVs (trail bikes, for example) only when BOTH of the following conditions exist:
• Must be under visual supervision of an adult;
• Must possess a valid ORV safety certificate
• F. No child under the age of 12 may cross any street, highway or county road while operating any ORV.
• G. Children who are at least 12 years old may cross streets and roads (only at right angles)

 Visual supervision is defined as having direct observation with the unaided eye and the ability to come to immediate aid of another ORV operator.

The parents and legal guardians of a child under the age of 16 are legally responsible if they permit the child under their care to violate any of the above.  The owner (or person in control) of an ORV is also responsible if his or her ORV is operated by a youngster.
